Osmosis Flashcards
What is the definition of osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a semi/partially-permeable membrane from a region of higher to lower water concentration.
What type of molecules can pass through the semi-permeable membrane? Name an example.
Small molecules-
Water
What type of molecules cannot pass through the semi-permeable membrane? Name an example.
Big molecules-
Sucrose
What is there if water is passing into the lower concentrated area of water?
There is a steady net flow of water into the less concentrated area of water.
Are water molecules able to pass through the membrane both ways. If so, why?
Water molecules can pass through the semi-permeable membrane both ways because they are always randomly moving.
What happens to the stronger sugar solution in the process of osmosis?
Because of the movement of the water particles now concentrating the area with water more, the sugar solution becomes more dilute.
