Where is a Colostomy?
Large intestine
Descending part - Firmer stool
Ascending or Transverse - More fluid stool
-Can be permanent or temporary
What is a Ileostomy?
End of the small intestine, the large intestine is removed, it is on the right hand side, and generally stool is more fluid like.
What is a Urostomy?
This is formed following removal of the bladder.
The output is urine.
This is not reversible and there is a continuous flow of urine.
Which foods/drinks can be gas producing?
Alcohol, Asparagus, Banana’s, Beans, Broccoli, Beef, Cucumber, Eggs, Mushrooms, Onions
What foods/drinks are Odour producing?
B vitamins, Some cheeses, Cauliflower, Fish, Garlic, Green vegetables, Onions, Parsnips, Turnips
What food/drinks increase/loosen stool?
Apples, Bran, Figs, Prunes, Spicy food, Wholegrain cereals
What food/drinks can cause a blockage?
Beef, Brocolli, Celery, Coleslaw, Grapes, Lamb (protein dense, slows the GI down), Mushrooms, Nuts, Sweetcorn, Popcorn, Insoluble fibre can cause a blockage in the gut.
What food/drinks can cause red stools?
Beetroot, Strawberries, Tomato sauce
What drugs can cause Intestinal Dysmotility?
Tricyclic antidepressants, Ca blockers, Opiates, Loperamide
If someone with a stoma is constipated what can they use?
Diet and medicines review.
Increase fluid and fibre.
Consider the use of Ispaghula Husk –> Not if pt has Ileostomy! as it increases water and salt loss
What can you give a patient who has a stoma and is complaining of Diarrhoea?
Diet and medicines review.
Oral rehydration
Loperamide (Liquid/ dispersible tablet) - Capsules can pass too quickly to be absorbed, stoma output needs checking.
