  • will of Zeus/Jupiter governs everything under a set of strict rules
  • laws of nature of physical realm determined by the highest god
  • the universe is a living creature/beast with soul spread throughout it
  • the universe has everything it needs to sustain itself indefinitely

  • there is no such thing as free will
  • everything is governed by the laws of the universe
  • nothing that has happened or will happen to you is out of your control

while we may not be able to control what happens to us, we can choose how we respond

what is the stoic ontology of value?

ontology = the philosophical study of being

A

1. good: always promotes happiness
(e.g. knowledge, justice, courage, etc.)

2. bad: always detracts from happiness
(e.g. ignorance, imputance, cowardice, etc.)

3. indifferent: contributes neither to happiness nor unhappiness
(e.g. health & disease, pleasure & pain, wealth & poverty)

virtue is sufficient for happiness
