Stoichiometry - Wks 3 & 4 Flashcards
What is a molecular mass?
Molecular weight also known as. Is the sum of all the atomic masses in a molecule.
What is the difference between theoretical and actual yield?
Theoretical yield - is the amount of product that would result of all the limiting reagent reacted.
Actual yield - is the amount of product actually obtained from a reaction.
The difference between the 2 multiplied by 100 will give the percentage yield.
What is an empirical formula?
A chemical formula that uses the smallest while number subscripts to give the proportions of atoms of the different elements present.
What is molecular formula?
A formula that shows the actual numbers of different types of atoms present in a molecule.
What is a limiting reagent?
The reagent that determines how much product can form when non stoichiometric amounts of reagent are used.
What is an excess reagent?
The reagent left over when the limiting reagent has been used up?
What is an average atomic mass?
Is the sum of the masses of its isotopes, each multiplied by its natural abundance.
What is a chemical reaction?
A process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances to another. Involves changes that only involve the positions of electrons and breaking of chemical bonds between atoms.
What is a mole?
A unit of measurement for an amount of substance
