What is gonorrhoea?
Gonorrhoea is any manifestation of infection by N gonorrhoeae.
What is incubation period of gonorrhoea?
2-5 days
What are Sx of gonorrhoea?
In males, yellow urethral discharge and dysuria
In females, cervicitis leads to vaginal discharge
What are local complications of gonorrhoea?
Urethral strictures, epididymitis, salpingitis (causing pain)
What are Sx of disseminated gonorrhoea infection?
Occurs due to haem spread from the mucosal infection
tenosynovitis
migratory polyarthritis
septic arthritis
dermatitis
How is gonorrhoea diagnosed
NAAT test: PCR from a male urine sample, rectal, or throat swab
In women, NAAT from vulvovaginal swab
Can confirm a positive NAAT with a culture for antibiotic sensitivities
What is Rx of gonorrhoea?
Ceftriaxone IM and azithromycin
Do a test of cure
What is chlamydia?
STI caused by chlamydia trachomatis, most common STI in the UK
What is incubation period for chlamydia?
7-21 days
What is Sx of chlamydia?
Mostly asymptomatic
In women, may be cervicitis e.g. bleeding and discharge, dysuria
In men, may be urethral discharge and dysuria
What Ix in chlamydia?
NAAT from first void urine sample in men, from a vulvovaginal swab in women
What are complications of chlamydia?
PID epididymitis endometriosis infertility reactive arthritis
What is Rx for chlamydia?
Doxycycline for a week, or azithromycin 1g oral stat
What is Lymphogranuloma venereum
Disruptive strain of chlamydia which can cause severe proctitis, rectal bleeding, abscesses
need 3 weeks doxy
What is syphilis?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum.
