stigmatisation of old age Flashcards
Titmus
Two nations of old age. The haves=under 75, white mc males who are married. have nots=over 75, widowed, women minority ethnic background, wc. The older you are the more disadvantaged you are. 2009/10 data shows the older you are, the lower your income.
Bernard and Meade
‘old age is very much an issue for and about women.’ Live longer as don’t do manual labour and go to doctors. would be more men but ww2. generation ratio shows at aged 60-74: 50-50 spilt. but 75+, 38-62 split.
Arber and ginn
‘feminization of later life.’ ageism and sexism combine=women at a greater disadvantage. negative attribution more pronounced than men e.g. evil old hag and persecution of witches in 15th century. modern day, characterised as slow.
Sontag
‘double standard of ageing’. men valued less on how they look and more on what they do. signs of character if males have grey hair. women under more pressure to ward off signs of ageing as only wanted when attractive
Itzin
white male chronology hinges on employment, womens on their reproductive system. women have higher value in earlier stage of life course as thats when useful to men. double standard of women dating: if an older woman dates a younger man its unaccepted
Groves
poverty at old age is a greater risk for women due to intermittent employment history. doesn;t allow for them to receive state pension, build up savings or make investments. pension is key to living above poverty line.
vincent
old age has a systematic impact and is an independent source of inequality within its own right
arber gin (2)
later in life women will demand a better deal due to longer education and feminism
