What are some symptoms of STI’s?
ulceration, lumps, discharge, rashes
What are some systemic symptoms and outocmes of STI’s
Fever Rash Lymphadenopathy Malaise Infertility Cancer (cervical from HPV) Syphilis can cause adverse pregnancies
What are some tests fro STI’s?
Nucleic acid amplification tests
Enzyme immunoassays for chlamydia
What are the principles of management of STI’s?
Take a good history
Notify partner
HIV testing
Health promotion
What is involved in a sexual history?
When did you last have sexual contact Casual contact vs regualr partner Male or female NAture of sex Did you use condoms Other contraception Nationality of contact
What are the goals of a sexual history?
Possible cause of symptoms
Detecting high risk behaviour and advising and reducing future risk
Tracing contacts
WHat specific questions do you ask men? (5)
Sex with a man? Injected drugs? Sex with someone outside UK Medical treatment outside UK? Involvement with sex industry (prostitutes)
What are the two ways of contacting partners?
Client referral
Provider referral
What good sexual practices are promoted?
Condoms
Sex education (condoms cant stop herpes and warts)
Oral sex carries risk too
Alcohol and other drugs make things worse
