What causes vulvovaginal candidosis?

What are the symptoms?

A

V common ,can be trivial but can cause misery in a minority
90% candida albicans
Usually acquired from bowel
Often asymptomatic, if symptomatic:

Thrush, itch, Characteristic discharge (thick cottage cheese, often described as an increased amount)
Fissuring, erythema with satellite lesions

A

Diabetes/oral steroids
Reproductive age group
Immune suppression
Pregnancy

A

Azole antifungals (clotrimazole 500mg, PV once, Fluconazole 150mg PO once

Maintain skin,a void irritants, treat dermatitis

What is bacterial vaginosis?

What are the symptoms?

A

Typical asymptomatic bacterial infection caused by a reduction in lactobacilli and an overgrowth of associated bacteria

It is the commonest cause of bacterial vaginosis and may cause watery grey/yellow discharge
May be worse after periods/sex
Sometimes sore/itch from dampness

A

small, shiny, skin-colored growths on a woman’s vulva, which is the outer part of the vagina. The growths, or papillae, occur in a line or as symmetrical patches on the labia minora — smaller inner folds — on both sides of the vulva
