What is SRMA?
Vasculitis/arteritis affecting the meningeal vessels throughout the entire length of the spinal cord and brainstem
What breeds are predisposed to SRMA? (5)
Beagle Bernese mountain dog Boxers German shepherd dogs Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
What are the clinical signs of SRMA? (5)
Neck pain Reluctance to walk Arched spine Resistant to manipulation Fever
CSF analysis results in SRMA and the complicating factor?
Increased protein
Neutrophilic pleocytosis
Within 24 hours of prednisolone administration, CSF may be normal or show mononuclear cells
What disease can occur concurrently with SRMA?
Immune mediated polyarthritis
What is the treatment for SRMA?
Immunosuppressive 2mg/kg q12h tapering over 4-6 months.
Azathioprine can be used if no response after 2 weeks
What are the consequences of delayed treatment?
Neurological deficits associated with spinal cord infarction or meningeal fibrosis
