Head Tilt Flashcards
A disturbance of the vestibular system is indicated by-
Head tilt
Nystagmus
With central or peripheral vestibular disease, the head tilt and circling occur
Ipsilateral to the lesion
Animals with peripheral vestibular disease have 3 important descriptors
Normal consciousness but disoriented
Facial nerve deficits or Horner’s syndrome
Have horizontal or rotary nystagmus
Animals with central vestibular disease have additional clinical signs
Deficits of cranial nerves V to XII
Ipsilateral UMN paraparesis or postural deficits
Depression of consciousness
Nystagmus with central disease can:
Be horizontal, rotary or vertical
Change with different positions of the head
What is different about paradoxical vestibular disease?
Head tilt and circling contralateral to the lesion
Proprioceptive deficits contralateral to the head tilt
How is paradoxical vestibular disease characterised?
Vestibular signs with cerebellar disease
Dysmetria, head tremor or truncal sway
What is pendulous nystagmus and when is it encountered?
Small oscillations with no fast or slow phase
Incidental in Siamese, Birman and Himalayan cats
