Sternum Flashcards
How many parts of sternum?
Sternum has 3 parts:
1. Manubrium
2. Body
3. Xiphoid process
The superior part of manubrium has a depression called?
Suprasternal/Jugular notch
On either side of jugular notch what joints are present?
Sternoclavicular joints
What is a facet?
A cartilage lined depression in bone
How many facets on lateral edges of sternum?
2 facets:
1. Facet for articulation with costal cartilage of 1st rib
2. Demifacet (half-facet) for articulation with costal cartilage of 2nd rib
Inferiorly manubrium articulates with body of sternum forming?
Sternal angle
Sternal angle marks the level of which costal cartilage?
2nd costal cartilage
Largest part of sternum?
Body
What are the 2 joints formed by body of sternum?
1.manubriosternal joint
Superiorly with manubrium
2.Xiphisternal joint
Inferiorly with xiphoid process
Articular facets present on the lateral edges of body are for costal cartilages of which ribs?
3 - 6
Smaller facets - Demi-facets are for which ribs?
2nd and 7th
Smallest part of sternum?
Xiphoid process
Which part of sternum is cartilaginous and ossifies late in life - around age of 40?
Xiphoid process
No ribs or costal cartilages are attached to which part of sternum?
