The mediastinum is the central compartment of the chest between the lungs. It contains the heart, great blood vessels, esophagus, trachea, and other structures.
Inferiorly - diaphragm
Superiorly - thoracic inlet
Posteriorly - thoracic vertebrae
Anteriorly - manubrium and sternum
