Stereoisomerism Flashcards
What is stereoisomerism?
Compound have the same molecular formula and the same structural formula but, they have a different arrangement of atoms in space
What 2 properties must a molecule have to satisfy E/Z isomerism?
- C=C double bond
- Each carbon in the double bond must be attached to two different group
Where are the groups attached if a molecule has E isomerism?
Opposite ends of the C in the double bond
(Top and bottom)
Where are the groups attached if a molecule has Z isomerism?
Same end of the C in the double bond
(Top and Top) or (Bottom and Bottom)
What is cis-trans isomerism?
- Must have a C=C double bond with two different groups attached
- One of the attached groups must be a H atom
Which correspond between cis-trans and E/Z?
Cis = Z
Trans = E (opposite)
How is priority of attached groups determined?
- The higher the atomic number, the higher the priority
How do you assign priority to two molecules with the same initial atom attached to carbon?
Continue along the molecule until you find the first point of difference and then compare atomic number to assign priority.
