What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound that only contains hydrogen and carbon.
What is the difference between a saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon?
Saturated = single bonds between carbons only
Unsaturated = one or more carbon to carbon multiple bonds
What is an aliphatic hydrocarbon?
The carbons are joined together in a straight or branched chain
What is an alicyclic hydrocarbon?
The carbons are joined together in a ring structure
What is an aromatic compound?
Some or all of the carbon atoms are found in a benzene ring
What is a functional group?
The part of the organic molecule which is responsible for its chemical properties
What is a homologous series?
Organic compounds which have the same functional group but with each successive member differing by CH2
What are the steps to naming an organic molecule?
- Identify the stem
- Identify the bonding
- Identify side chains
