Polymerisation Of Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
What is a polymer?
A
A long molecular chain built up from many monomer units
2
Q
What is a monomer?
A
A small molecule that combines with many other monomers to from a polymer
3
Q
Describe the process of recycling polymers.
A
- Polymers are chopped into flakes, washed, dried and melted
- Cut into pellets and made into new products
4
Q
Describe why and how we recycle PVC.
A
- Has a high chlorine content so is toxic
- We use solvent to dissolve the PVC and then the PVC precipitate is removed and we can reuse the solvent
5
Q
Why can polymers be used as a fuel source?
A
- have a high stored energy value
- so can be incinerated to produce heat which can generate steam to drive turbines
6
Q
What is another use of polymer waste?
A
Feedstock recycling
7
Q
What are biodegradable polymers?
A
Breakdown as a result of bacterial activity.
8
Q
What are photodegradable polymers?
A
Contain bonds that are weakened by absorbing light to start the degradation.
