stereoisomerism Flashcards
stereoisomers
same structural formulae but have a different spatial arrangement of atoms
E-Z stereoisomerism
- there is restricted rotation around the C=C double bond.
- there are two different groups/atoms attached to the carbon on both ends of the double C=C bonds
priority group
atom with the bigger atomic number is classed as the priority atom
naming E-Z isomers
first determine the priority groups on both sides of the double bond.
if the priority atom is on the same side of the double bond it is labelled Z
if the priority atom is on the opposite side of the double bond it is labelled E
how do you remember Z isomers?
from the german - Zusammen (same)
or zame zide
how do you remember E isomers?
from the german - entgegen (opposite)
or the epposite side
cis trans isomerism
special case of E-Z isomerism in which two of the substituent groups are the same
