Discuss Preview
This is the preliminary task of previewing, over-viewing or surveying the work of art. It is very crucial to the other steps and gives useful insight into the work about to be the examined in depth.
Discuss questioning
This is raising issues that one expects the work to answer/throw more light on. It involves mental inquiry, scrutiny, research and exploration of the possible puzzles in the work.
An experienced critic?
Is familiar with the reactions of readers(although each is unique and reactions may vary from work to work) and is therefore in a position to confirm or refute those positions and doubts.
Discuss reading/observation
This is the main task which requires more than ordinary attention that enables him give adequate guide to the prospective reader through his qualified judgement. In case of a movie,play or cultural performance this is observation.
The critic must?
Familiarize himself with the work by researching on the genre, antecedents, past productions and biographical data on the creator, producer and key characters in the work.
A reviewer can’t?
Afford to hold half formed ideas or opinions which may then pass off as the factual judgement or truth about the book.
Discuss set-out
This is to draft in graphic form, his interpretation and judgement. Attempts are made to answer questions raised about the work and requires the tools of efficient writing.
Tips for setting out
- Provide specific info that’ll help the reader identify the work on the shelf.
- Include technical data such as dimension, tectonic, visual, cultural elements and cost.
- Provide info on readership size in cases of reprints.
Discuss taking stock
This is taking another look, rethinking, revising and rewriting where necessary. This provides an opportunity to detect errors of facts, opinions and numerical inaccuracies. At the end ask is it the impression you intended to create?
Tips for taking stock
- This shouldn’t be done in a hurry so avoidable errors may not be skipped due to oversight.
- Take a break to disengage mentally and reassess one’s effort.
- Be objective.
