Reviews are written in the present tense
Second tip
Know the target audience and media relevant to the review. How much details to provide on the plot, the level of analysis, style, choice of words will depend on the characteristics of the demographic.
Third tip
Read the book thoroughly. As much as possible in order to feel and understand the storyline or plot as well as the characters. Reading done isn’t for fun but to enable assessment of the quality of the book.
Tip 4
Read the preface, prologue or any introductory part of the book, if any. This contains some background info or the intentions of the author which maybe useful in writing the review.
Tip 5
Any good review should have an introduction, body and conclusion. The beginning is very important as it determines if the review will actually be read or not. It should attract the reader.
How to attract readers?
- Use an anecdote that sets the tone and announces the central point.
- State what makes the work relevant at that particular point in time.
- State the topical theme.
Tip 6
Assess the work honestly and with utmost understanding. Give credit where it’s due and make condemnations where necessary. Point out strengths and weaknesses of the work and don’t be afraid to take a stand for or against it.
Tip 7 and 8
Give reasons that support or illustrate where praises and blames are heaped and learn how to write well. This can only be achieved through constant practice.
