What are the steps in a trial?

Why are jurors sworn in?
To make sure they are fair and unbiased, and will follow the rules provided by the judge, and don’t discuss the case.
Why is a jury not permitted to discuss the case outside the courtroom
To make sure they aren’t influenced.
Who makes the opening statement?
Both lawyers
What must the prosecutor prove in a criminal case?
That the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
What must the plaintiff prove in a civil trial
That the defendant is responsible for a wrongdoing.
Does the defendant need to prove that they are innocent?
No, the prosector/plaintiff must prove they are guilty.

What does a jury foreperson do?
They make sure discussions are conducted in a sensible and orderly fashion, that all issues are fully and fairly discussed, and that every juror has a chance to participate.
How is a jury foreperson chosen?
The jury elects them.
What does a bailiff do?
They are a court official that keeps order in court, call witnesses, and makes sure no one influences the jury.
What does the court clerk do?
Responsible for giving the oath to jurors and witnesses, and is responsible for paperwork and evidence.
What does the court reporter do?
Court officer who records, word for word, everything that is said as part of the trial.
