Stem Cells, Key information Flashcards
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are cells which have not undergone differentiation and have not been specialised.
Where are undifferentiated cells found in plants?
Found in meristems and to the tip of the roots.
Where are undifferentiated cells found in animals?
In the bone marrow in the long bones.
What are the different types of stem cells?
Adult & embryonic.
What are adult stem cells?
Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells, found in the bone marrow.
They multiply by cell division to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues.
What are embryonic stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells found in the inner cell mass of a blastocyst. They are undifferentiated.
How can stem cells be used?
In type 1 diabetes, in cases of multiple sclerosis, which can lead to paralysis and in cases of spinal cord or brain injury.
What are the benefits of stem cells?
Treating patients with currently untreatable conditions, growing organs for transplants and medical research.
What are the risks of stem cells?
Could be the wrong time, may not be effective and they are reliant on donors.
