Mitosis, Stages Flashcards
How many stages are there of mitosis?
5
What are the processes of mitosis, in order of first to last process?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase & Cytokinesis.
What happens in Prophase?
The nucleus is still there as it is the beginning stage. The DNA is still in the nucleus and the chromosomes condense/are visible.
How do you remember what happens in prophase?
‘PRO’ means ‘BEFORE’
What happens in Metaphase?
The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. The nucleus has been disassembled/breaks away.
How do you remember what happens in metaphase?
‘M’ for ‘MIDDLE’
What happens in Anaphase?
The chromosomes move away from the middle towards the poles/sides of the cell. The chromosomes move along spindle fibres to help them get to the poles.
How do you remember what happens in Anaphase?
‘A’ for ‘AWAY’
What happens in Telophase?
The chromosomes are at the different poles of the cell. A nucleus forms around each of the chromosomes.
They each have 46 chromosomes.
How do you remember what happens in Telophase?
‘T’ for ‘TWO’
What happens in Cytokinesis?
The two cells finally split to form two genetically identical cells.
How do you remember what happens in Cytokinesis?
‘CYTO’ sounds like ‘SPLIT’
