Growth Flashcards
What is growth?
Growth is an increase in size, length and mass. It is achieved with an increase in number of cells.
What does growth involve? (3 types of cell functions e.g. Cell __)
Cell differentiation, cell division & cell elongation.
Which cell process for growth only occurs in plants?
Cell elongation.
What is CELL DIFFERENTIATION?
Cells are specialised in order to complete different tasks. There is one type of cell which scientists can use in order to make any cell. It is a STEM CELL.
What is CELL DIVISION?
Cells need to divide in order to grow and repair themselves. The process is called MITOSIS.
What is CELL ELONGATION?
Where a plant cell expands, making it bigger and so the plant grows. ONLY HAPPENS IN PLANTS! The hormone that causes this to happen is called the AUXIN.
What are Meristems?
A group of cells at the tip of the roots and shoots where mitosis happens. It enables the plant to grow.
Where does growth occur in plants?
Mainly at shoot and root tips and in special growth zones like buds.
Where does growth occur in animals?
New cells can be made by most tissues.
How does growth occur in plants?
Size increase is often caused by increasing the size (elongation) of cells by absorbing water into the vacuole.
How does growth occur in animals?
Size increase is brought about by increasing the number of cells.
Which cells are specialised in plants?
Most plant cells can differentiate into different cell types.
Which cells are specialised in animals?
Only stem cells can differentiate into different cell types. Other animal cell functions remain fixed.
