Stem Cells And Reproductive Ethics Flashcards
What are the key features of stem cells?
Unspecialised
Self-renew
Differentiate into different types of cells
Pluripotent
Can differentiate into any cell
Multipotent
Found in our tissues, can differentiate into “a few” different cell types
E.g. bones, bone marrow but not blood
Unipotent
Differentiate into one cell type
What is a mature cell?
A stem cell after differentiation
What are four ways stem cells are used in research?
- Studying cell differentiation
- Gain understanding of prevention and treatments of birth defects
- Toxicity tests
- Identifying drug targets and therapeutics (regenerative medicine)
What is included in regenerative medicine ?
Repair, replace, restore, and regenerate - replacement of cells/tissues after damage
Where do adult stem cells come from?
Somatic tissues
What are somatic tissues?
Internal organs, skin, bones, blood, connective tissue
Are adult stem cells pluripotent, multipotent, or unipotent?
Adult stem cells are unipotent
What is the role of adult stem cells?
To maintain and renew it’s organ throughout the life of the organism that it belongs to
Autologous
Taken from a person and returned to the same person
Allogenic
Taken from a person and returned to a different person
What stage of the cell cycle are true stem cells in?
G0
What are two uses for haematopoietic stem cells (HSC)?
*Bone marrow transplant
*Transplants for patients who need (diseased) blood replacement
