Stem Cells Flashcards
Where are embryonic stem cells found?
In early human embryos
Where are adult stem cells found?
In bone marrow.
What is a disadvantage of adult stem cells?
Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells canβt turn into any. type of cell, only certain ones, such as blood cells.
How can adult stem cells cure disease? Give an example.
Stem cells get transferred from the bone marrow of a healthy person, and can replace faulty blood cells in the patient who receives them.
How can embryonic stem cells cure disease? Give an example.
You could use embryonic stem cells to make insulin producing cells for people with diabetes, and nerve cells for people paralysed by spinal injuries.
How can you ensure that the body receiving embryonic stem cells for treatment wont reject them?
Therapeutic cloning
What is therapeutic cloning?
An embryo made to have the same genetic information as the patient receiving them. This means the stem cells will contain the same genes and wouldnβt be rejected by the patients body.
What are risks In using stem cells in medicine?
Stem cells grown in the lab may become contaminated with a virus which could be passed on to the patient and make them sicker.
Where are stem cells found in plants?
Meristem
What occurs in the meristem?
Growth
For how long can plants in the meristem tissues differentiate?
Throughout the plantβs entire life
What can plant stem cells be used for?
Can be used to produce clones of whole plants quickly and cheaply. They can also be used to grow more plants of rare or endangered species.
