Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
In which states of matter does diffusion happen?
Diffusion happens in both solutions and gases because the particles in these substances are free to move about randomly.
What is the simplest type of diffusion? Give an example of when t happens.
When different gases diffuse through eachother. An example of this is when the smell of perfume diffuses through a room.
What is the concentration gradient?
The difference in concentration
What is the rate of diffusion when there is a big concentration gradient?
The rate of diffusion will be faster.
What will a high temperature do to the rate of diffusion?
The rate of diffusion will be faster because the particles have more energy and will move around faster.
What molecules can diffuse through cell membranes?
Small molecules like water, oxygen, amino acids, and glucose. Big molecules like starch and proteins canβt fit through the membrane.
What will a large surface area of a membrane do to the rate of diffusion?
The rate of diffusion will be faster because more particles can pass through at once
