stem cells Flashcards
1
Q
unique features of stem cells
A
- undifferentiated, unspecialised cells
- capable of undergoing extensive proliferation and self renewal through mitosis
- can differentiate into various specialised cells upon stimulation by molecular signals
2
Q
why is it important
A
needed in development, cellular regenration and repair
3
Q
what cells cannot undergo mitosis
A
specialised cells: white blood cells, red blood cells etc
4
Q
what is a totipotent stem cell
A
- able to differentiate into all of the cell times that make up an organism including the placenta
- can form an entire organism
e.g. zygotic stem cell, cells formed within the FIRST THREE DIVISIONS
5
Q
what is a pluripotent stem cell
A
- ability to differentiate into ALL of the cell types that make up an organism EXCEPT the placenta
- cannot form the entire organism
6
Q
what are embryonic stem cells
A
