STEM 1 Flashcards
Explain how an object makes a shadow
The object blocks the light, which creates a shadow.
Explain why a model showing light (1), object (2), and shadow (3) is correct.
Because the light (1) is giving a direct path to the object (2) , the shadow (3) is in the same direction as the light (1), and the shadow (3) is the same shape as the object (2).
What are the requirements needed to be able to see an object?
Light source, direct path, eyesight, and an object.
Katie and Sam are going for a walk. Katie runs ahead and hides behind a bush. Explain what Sam can and cannot see in the bush using what you know about how light interacts with objects.
There is a bush blocking Sam’s vision. Sam can see the bush. He cannot see Katie. When Sam moves more, he can see Katie.
Draw a model of a shadow and label each part.
Light (1)
Object (2)
Shadow (3)
Draw a model of a person not being able to see an object. Explain why the person is not able to see.
Person (1)
Wall (2)
Object (3)
The person cannot see the object because there is a wall blocking his vision of the object.
Does a picture of a child [with their back to the sun] looking at their shadow in front of them accurately represent a shadow? Provide evidence.
Yes, because the light source has a direct path to the object, the shadow is in the same direction as the light source, and the shadow has the same shape as the object.
Draw a diagram that shows a person being able to see an object. Explain why the person is able to see.
The person can see the object because the light source is giving a direct path to their eyes.
Create a diagram of a person seeing an object in the dark using a flashlight.
Person [in dark] (1)
Light source (2)
Object [in light] (3)
Explain everything that happens which allows (or does not allow) you to see an object in the dark using a flashlight.
The light is reflected off the object back into the persons eyes. The person can’t see objects in the dark that do not have a light source shining on them.
[picture of the accurate size shadows of two people holding hands] Describe where the light source is coming from. Provide evidence.
Based on the shadows, the light source is coming from above and behind them. I know this because the shadows are accurate shapes of people, who are the objects that have a direct path from a light source behind them, and the shadow is in the same direction as the light source.
What can prevent an object from being seen?
To prevent an object from being seen, remove it from your line of sight or put it in a dark room.
