BACTERIAL; painful or burning pee, discharge, pain/swelling (not everyone!!); sexual contact, mother to child; cotton swab to sample discharge; treatable with antibiotics; pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) when not treated

syphilis
bacterial; symptoms can take months to years to form and disappear
PRIMARY: formation of chancres, open sores where bacteria entered the body (genitalia or mouth), painless
SECONDARY: skin rash, fever, headache, sore throat, swelling
sexual contact, mother to child; blood test; treatable with antibiotics; LATENT: no symptoms, LATE (tertiary): irreversible damage, blindness, paralysis, liver damage, death
gonorrhea
bacterial; burning, discharge, later comes fever, vomiting, or bleeding; sexual contact, vaginal birth; examination of discharge or urine; treatable with antibiotics; sterility, PID, infections, blind babies
herpes
viral; itching/burning, blisters & sores in mouth & genitals, discharge, pain; sexual contact, vaginal delivery; viral swab or blood test; drugs can relieve symptoms but there is no cure
HPV
virus; human papillomavirus (over 70 types); genital warts (painless); sexual contact, vaginal delivery; warts are inspected; no treatment; cervical cancer
viral hepatitis
viral, types A, B, C, delta (D), and E; none to flu-like symptoms, pain, jaundice; sexual contact, sharing of needles, contaminated food or water; blood test; drugs and rest; liver cancer/disease, death
pediculosis
parasitic pubic lice; bites, itching; sex, toilet seats, towels, bedding; examination of body; cream and shampoo
trichomoniasis
parasitic; sex contact; discharge, painful urine, itching; smear of fluid is examined; drugs
