What is syphillis?
organism is spirochete treponema pallidum(gram negative bacteria)
How can syphillis be transmitted?
placenta
How is syphillis treated?
penicillin
What is syphillis associated with?
Hutchinson’s triad(interstitial keratitis, notched permanent incisors, CNVIII deafness)
What is the diagnostic tool for syphillis?
Darkfield microscopy, labs (VDRI, FTA/ABS,TPI)
What is the primary stage of syphillis?
hard chancre that is singular and painless(up to 8 weeks)
What is the secondary stage of syphillis?
maculopapular rash, condylomatat lata (flat warts) and alopecia (8 weeks to 2 years)
transmission to others usually occurs during this stage
What is the tertiary stage of syphillis?
tabes dorsalis, gummas, vascular damage(aortic aneurysm or aortic valve insufficiency)(can last >25 years) - no tranmission can occur during this stage
