Staying In Balance Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Keeping a constant internal environment by balancing bodily inputs and outputs through negative feedback.
What does it regulate?
- Temperature
- CO2 levels
- Water levels
What is the optimum temperature for most enzymes in the human body?
37*C
What is temperature controlled by?
The hypothalamus gland which triggers vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
How does the body cool down?
1) Sweating increases to transfer heat to the environment
2) Vasodilation occurs, blood vessels widen so blood flows closer to the surface of the skin
3) This increases heat transfer so evaporation of sweat can occur by using body heat to turn it into water vapour
What is vasoconstriction?
Constriction of blood vessels so less blood flows to the surface of the skin so less heat is transferred.
What is blood sugar levels controlled by?
Insulin (hormone)
Where is insulin produced?
The pancreas
What happens when there is too much glucose in the blood?
1) Pancreas produces insulin
2) Insulin allows glucose to be absorbed by body cells
3) Converts glucose into glycogen which is stored in the liver
4) Blood sugar levels decrease
How does type 1 diabetes affect the body and how is it managed?
The pancreas doesn’t produce insulin so you must injected doses of insulin after eating.
How does type 2 diabetes affect the body and how is it managed?
Insulin has no effect on the body so blood sugars levels must be decreased by having a balanced diet and regularly exercising.
