Drugs And You Flashcards
What are the five types of drugs? Give an example for each.
Stimulant - caffeine Depressant - alcohol Hallucinogen - LSD Painkiller - aspirin Performance Enhancer - anabolic steroids
How does a stimulant decrease reaction time?
It produces more neurotransmitter to diffuse across the synapse so impulses are passed along neurones quicker.
How does a depressant increase reaction time?
It blocks the neurotransmitter from reaching some of the receptor molecules of the other neurone by bind with some receptor molecules.
What is an effect of smoking that has nothing to do with blood pressure?
Smoker’s cough
Where are cilia found?
- Epithelial lining of the trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
How is smoker’s cough caused?
1) Smoke contains chemicals that stop cilia moving
2) Dust irritates the epithelial lining
3) Mucus produced by goblet cells not being moved by the cilia
What are the short term effects of alcohol?
- Increases reaction times
- Increases risk of accidents
What is a long term effect of alcohol?
Cirrhosis of the liver (the liver is damaged when it breaks down toxins)
