The FWO has offices throughout Australia that are located in the capital cities and regional areas of all states and territories.

- promoting harmonious, productive and cooperative workplace relations
- educating people working in Australia about fair work practices, rights and obligations
- promoting and monitoring compliance with Cwth. workplace laws
- investigating complaints
- investigating, of its own accord, suspected breaches of workplace laws, awards and registered agreements and some Fair Work Commission orders
- commencing proceedings or making applications to enforce Cwth. workplace laws and, where appropriate, seeks a penalty for contravention of Cwth. workplace laws
- representing workers who are, or might become, a party to proceedings
- building strong and effective relationships with industry, unions and other stakeholders
