Calibrated
checked against external standards.
Microgram
One-millionth part of a gram.
Outliers
Extreme measurements that occur far from the center of a data set compared to the bulk of the data.
Bias
A systematic error that affects all measurements in one way, either pushing them all too high or all too low.
Cance Error
A tendency that no matter how accurate measurements are made on the same object, each measurement always comes out a bit differently.
Replicate the measurements many times and compute the SD of the measurements
Best way to estimate the likely size of the chance error in a measurement process.
Cartesian Coordinates
The x and y coordinate system.
Slope
The rate at which y increases with x along the line. A measurement of the line’s steepness.
Intercept
The height of a line at x=0. Where the line crosses the y-axis.
Y=MX+B
The equation of a line.
Satter Diagram
A diagram of dots, where each dot represents a related pair of values (one x-value and one y-value).
Strong Linear Association
When the dots on a scatter diagram are tightly clustered around a line.
Correlation Coefficient
Denoted by the letter ‘r’, a measure of the strength of a linear association, with possible values between -1 and 1.
Positive Associations
Indicated by a plus-sign on the correlation coefficient, where the cloud of the scatter plot slopes upward to the right.
Negative Association
Indicated by a minus-sign on the correlation coefficient, where the cloud of the scatter plot slopes downward to the right.
