Statistics Chapter 1 Flashcards
What does the term statistical notion refer to?
Refers to the standardized code for symbolizing the mathematical operations performed in the formulas and symbolizing the answers we obtain.
To how many places should you round the final answer?
To two more decimal places than were in the original scores.
If you are rounding to two decimal places, what are the ruled for rounding up or down?
If the number in the third decimal place is 5 or greater, round up the number in the second decimal. If the number in the third decimal place is less than 5, round down by not changing the number in the second decimal place.
What is transformation?
Is a mathematical procedure for systematically converting a set of scores.
Why do we transform data?
For two reasons:
A. They make scores more easier to work with.
B. They make different kinds of scores comparable.
If no other information is given, what is the order in which to perform mathematical operations?
In order: parenthesis, squaring and square roots, multiplications, divisions, additions and subtraction.
What is a percentage?
Is a proportion multiplied by 100.
What is data point?
It is the dot placed on a graph when plotting a pair of X and Y scores.
A researcher measures the IQ scores of a group in college students. What four things will the researcher use for statistics?
- Procedures organize the scores to see patterns
- Summarize the scores.
- Communicate the result of the study.
- Conclude with the data indicate.
What is a proportion?
A proportion is a decimal number between 0 and 1 that indicates a action of the total.
How do you transform a percentage to a proportion?
Divide the percent by 100 eg. (50/100)(12)=6
Why do researchers need to learn statistics?
To conduct research and to understand the research of others.
