Statistical concepts Flashcards
What are the 4 data types?
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
Ratio
What is the role of nominal data?
Denotes classification or category membership
Characteristics of nominal data
Numbers are labels only
Frequency data
Non-parametric
Made by discrimination tests
Example of nominal data
Number of skittles of each colour in a bag
What is ordinal data?
Categorical data that implies order
Characteristics of ordinal data
Increase in number=increase in magnitude of attribute
No assumption that categories are equidistant
Non-parametric
Example of ordinal data
Chilli symbols on a menu
What is interval data?
Numbers imply order and intervals are the same
Why can interval data not be multiplied or divided?
Numbers don’t imply proportions
No true zero
Parametric data
Example of interval data
Continuous line scales used in QDA
Characteristics of ratio data
Numbers imply order and equal intervals
Has zero value
Numbers are proportional
Parametric data
Example of ratio data
Duration and magnitude estimation
Why is time not ratio data?
There is no 0pm
What is non-parametric data?
Categorical data, we cannot assume there is a numerical relationship between points on a scale
What is parametric data?
Continuous data, there is a quantitative relationship between points
What is the significance if P<0.05?
Significant
What is the significance if P>0.05?
No significance
