Station 8: The Knee Flashcards
Joints of the Knee
Name, classify and identify actions that occur at the joint
Name: Tibiofemoral Joint
Classify: Synovial Bi-condyloid Diathrotic Biaxial
Actions
- Flexion
- Extension
- Some rotation
Joints of the Knee
Name, classify and identify the actions that occur at the articulation between the femur and the patella
Name: Femoropatellar Joint
Classify: Synovial Plane Diathrotic Non axial
Actions:
-gliding of patella
The Patella
Classify the Bone
What are its primary purposes?
Classify:Sesamoid Bone
Purposes:
- Anterior protection
- Leverage (Quadriceps)
- Shock absorption (gliding plane)
- Reduce friction (gliding plane)
Ligaments of the Knee
Name the six main ligaments of the knee joint
Acknowledge if this ligament is extracapsula or intracapsular
Identify the specific movements that occur at each
Extracapsular:
- Fibular Collateral Ligament
- Resists lateral movement - Tibial Collateral Ligament
- Resists lateral movement - Oblique Popliteal Ligament
- Prevents hyper extension - Arcuate Popliteal Ligament
- Prevents hyper extension
Intracapsular:
- Anterior Cruciate Ligament
- Prevents anterior displacement of the tibia/posterior displacement of the femur
- e.g. Running and braking or twisting - Posterior Cruciate Ligament
- Prevents posterior displacement of the tibia/anterior displacement of the femur
- e.g. Hit from the front
What structures contribute to the stability of the knee joint?
- Ligaments
- Muscles
- Bones
