Q

Ligaments of the Knee

Name the six main ligaments of the knee joint

Acknowledge if this ligament is extracapsula or intracapsular

Identify the specific movements that occur at each

A

Extracapsular:

  1. Fibular Collateral Ligament
    - Resists lateral movement
  2. Tibial Collateral Ligament
    - Resists lateral movement
  3. Oblique Popliteal Ligament
    - Prevents hyper extension
  4. Arcuate Popliteal Ligament
    - Prevents hyper extension

Intracapsular:

  1. Anterior Cruciate Ligament
    - Prevents anterior displacement of the tibia/posterior displacement of the femur
    - e.g. Running and braking or twisting
  2. Posterior Cruciate Ligament
    - Prevents posterior displacement of the tibia/anterior displacement of the femur
    - e.g. Hit from the front
