Statics Test 2 Theory Flashcards
what are the 5 classifications of materials?
metals, polymers, ceramics and glass, composites, and naturals
what are the 8 mechanical properties?
strength, elasticity, stiffness, ductility, brittleness, hardness, fatigue strength, and creep
define strength
the largest stress a material can withstand without failure
define elasticity
the ability of a material to assume its original pre-load shape after the load that caused the deformation is removed
define stiffness
a measure of a materials ability to resist deformation in the elastic region
define ductility
a measure of a materials ability to deform permanently or plastically before breaking or rupturing.
(very ductile materials can elongate up to 30% of their original length before breaking)
define brittleness
describes a material which will have little or no permanent deformation before breaking
define hardness
a materials ability to resist penetration
what is fatigue strength?
an indication of how a material performs under repetitive cycles of loading
define creep
a materials slow continuous deformation over time
define resilience
a materials capacity to absorb energy without any plastic or permanent deformation
define toughness
a materials capacity to absorb energy without breaking or fracturing
