What is a dominant image?
The largest and most centred image on the page. It contains the main idea (often the product, but not always) of the advertisement.
What is a symbol?
An image that is used to represent an idea or brand.
e.g. a skull and crossbones to show that something is poisonous
What is a stereotype?
An image of a person that is used to represent a certain group of society.
(e. g. a girl wearing pink)
(e. g. a French person wearing a beret, with a moustache, holding a baguette).
What is a caricature?
An image that takes a famous person and exxagerates their features.
What is superimposition?
Where one image is placed on top of another image for effect.
What is a logo?
An image that is used to represent a particular company or brand.
What is colour?
The use of colour in an advertisement and its symbolic associations (e.g. blue is calm, red is anger or passion, green is nature)
What is a headline?
The largest or most dominant piece of text on a page.
What is a slogan?
A group of words associated with a brand or company.
e. g. Nike: Just Do It
(e. g. McDonald’s: I’m Lovin’ It)
What is font/typography?
The style, size and colour of lettering used on an advertisement.
What is reverse text?
White letters on a black background.
What is layout?
The way in which images and letters are arranged on a page.
What is foreground and background?
Foreground is words/images that are placed in front of others (are superimposed).
Background are words/images that are at the back (are behind superimposed objects) in the image.
What is framing?
When borders are used to draw attention to certain parts of the image.
What is shading?
The use of light and dark to draw attention to certain parts of the image.
What is contrast?
The use of differences in size (big and small), shape (round and square) and colour (bright and dull; black and white) are used in an image to draw attention to certain things.
