Revise the definitions of parts of speech and practise identifying parts of speech
What is a noun?
A name or label for a thing (e.g. ‘cat’)
What is a verb?
A word that expresses action - a ‘doing’ word (e.g. running)
What is an adjective?
A word that adds information to a noun (e.g. a GREEN cat)
What is an adverb?
A word that adds information to a verb (e.g. I ran FAST)
What is an auxiliary verb?
A verb that ‘helps’ a main verb by showing tense (the time the main verb took place) (e.g. I WILL go)
What is an article?
A special type of adjective - the/a/an
What is a preposition?
A word that shows a position or a relationship (e.g. with, under, on, after)
What is an interjection?
A word that isn’t any other part of speech and is usually used in conversation to add emphasis (e.g. Oh! Aha! Hmmm…)
What is a conjunction?
A word that joins two sentences together (e.g. and, but, nor)
What is a concrete noun?
A thing that can be perceived by our five senses (touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing) or a scientific instrument (e.g. cat, gravity)
What is an abstract noun?
A thing that cannot be perceived through our five senses (touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing) or a scientific instrument (e.g. love, happiness)
What is a common noun?
A specific type of concrete noun. It is the general name for a thing (e.g. a book, a dog, a school, a teacher)
What is a proper noun?
A specific type of concrete noun. It is the specific name for a thing (e.g. Lord of the Rings, Auckland Grammar School, Miss Forster)
