Q

What is static electricity?

A

It is the build-up of electrons caused by friction. An example is when balloons are rubbed against wool. Static electricity can not be used as a stable source of electricity, but we can create static electricity using a Tesla coil.

There are also other ways to genreate static electricity.

Q

How does lightning work?

A

Lightning occurs when ice particles experience friction, giving some negative charges and some positive, and are separated with the electrons on the bottom and protons on the top. Then, the negatively charged particles build up a positive charge on the ground, and the build-up causes a huge shock of lightning. And then, the sound of the electricity is thunder.

Q

What are the three types of lighting?

A

Cloud to cloud, cloud to ground, cloud to air.
In cloud to cloud, the electricity is discharged between two clouds.
In cloud to ground, the most common, the negatively charged ice particles are at the bottom of the cloud and shoot down to the ground.
In cloud to air, the electrical charge of the lighting is diverted to positively charged air molecules.
