Static Electricity Flashcards
Name, list the charge of, and identify where each subatomic particle in an atom is located.
- Protons, positive charge, located in the nucleus.
- Neutrons, neutral charge, located in the nucleus
- Electrons, negative charge, located in the energy shells
Which charge can move in order to create static electricity?
static charge is generated through the movement of electrons on atoms.
What charge is created when an object loses electrons?
A positive charge.
What charge is created when an object gains electrons?
A negative charge.
What does it mean if a substance is electrically neutral?
The substance has the same number of positive and negative charges.
State the laws of electric charge.
- Objects that have opposite charges attract each other
- Objects that have the same charge repel each other
- Neutral objects attract charged objects
Define an insulator and give 2 examples.
A material in which electrons cannot move easily from one atom to another (e.g. non-metals, wood or plastic).
Define a conductor and give two examples.
A material in which electrons can move easily between atoms (e.g. metals, copper or silver).
Define a semi-conductor and give two examples.
A material in which electrons can move fairly well between atoms (e.g. non-metals, silicon or sulfur).
Three different ways static electricity can be created?
- Charging by friction
- Charging by conduction
- Charging by induction
What is the electrostatic series?
A list of materials that have been arranged according to their ability to hold on to electrons.
Define charging by friction.
Two neutral objects are rubbed together. One object loses electrons, the other gains electrons.
Define grounding.
When you use a ground to neutralize an object.
Define charging by conduction.
Charging by contact
Define charging by induction.
When a charged object is near a neutral object.
