Static and Dynamic Equilibrium Flashcards
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
The equilibrium has achieved a non-zero rate of forward and reverse reactions being equal in a closed system
(reverse rate = forward rate)
What is a static equlibrium?
Where the equilibrium is both the rate of the forward and backward reaction being equal to zero
rate(overall) = 0
- no micro/macro changes
tend to be irreversible reactions
Is combustion a static or dynamic equilibrium?
Static, because as it goes to completion, it reaches a rate of zero at the end of the reaction
Give an example of a dynamic equilibrium.
Water transferring experiement between two beakers, eventually they will reach the same rate of water being transferred (even if they don’t have the same concentrations)
Describe the difference between an open and closed system
An Open system allows energy and mass to be freely travelled throughout the system. In a closed system, the system does not exchange matter, but can allow energy to travel across.
