Intro statement - define
An Ionic compound such as PbCl2, are held together by ionic bonds.

Water molecules, which are polar, experience dispersion forces and hydrogen bonding. The polarity of water allows for electrostatic interactions between ions and water as shown in the diagram above.

Results in the formation of ion-dipole bonds. Dissolition will occur when the ion-dipole ions are more energetically favourable than the existing ionic bonds and intermolecular forces between the water molecules.
