States of Matter and Basic Chemistry Flashcards
What is matter?
Mater is anything which occupies space and has a mass.
What do you need for a change of state to happen?
Heat.
What happens if you add heat energy?
There is more movement.
What happens if you take away heat energy?
There is less movement.
What are some properties of a matter that is solid?
-rigid
-fixed shape
-fixed volume
-cannot be squashed
What are some properties of a matter that is liquid?
-not rigid
-no fixed shape
-fixed volume
-cannot be squashed
What are some properties of a matter that is gas?
-not rigid
-no fixed shape
-no fixed volume
-can be squashed
What is it called when a solid turns into a liquid?
Melting.
What is it called when a liquid turns into a solid?
Freezing.
What is it called when a liquid turns into a gas?
Evaporating or boiling.
What is it called when a gas turns into a liquid?
Condensing.
Which state of matter has compact molecules?
Solid.
Which state of matter has joined but spaced out molecules?
Liquid.
What state of matter has spaced out molecules?
Gas.
What are some things about chemical changes?
-not easily reversible
-new product(s) formed
-reactants used up —-
-often heat/light/sound/fizzing occurs.
-electricity may be produced
-a precipitate may form
e.g. Wood burning.
