Combustion Flashcards
What is complete combustion?
Fuels burn when they react with oxygen in the air and if there is plenty of air, we get complete combustion.
What is the word equation for complete combustion?
Hydrocarbon (fuel) + oxygen → water + carbon dioxide
What is incomplete combustion?
Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of air or oxygen is poor. Water is still produced, but carbon monoxide and carbon are produced instead of carbon dioxide.
What is the word equation for incomplete combustion?
hydrocarbon + oxygen → carbon monoxide + carbon + water
When investigating the products of combustion what do you test the products with?
CO2= Limewater Milky
H2O = Cobalt Chloride Paper
blue to pink/anhydrous
CuSO4 changes from white to blue.
