Compounds, Elements and Mixtures Flashcards
To find out how many protons, electrons and neutrons are in an element we need to know what?
The mass number and the atomic number.
How do you know how many protons, electrons or neutrons there are in the element?
Proton=Atomic number
Electrons=Atomic number
Neutrons=Mass number-atomic number
For Krypton How many protons, electrons and neutrons are there if the mass number is 84 and the atomic number is 36?
Protons=36
Electrons=36
Neutrons=48
How do you form a compound?
When atoms of two or more elements join together.
If atoms join together, how can this be shown?
A word or symbol equation.
What does
Iron +Sulphide–> ?
Iron Sulphide
What is the symbol equation for
Iron+ Sulphide–> ?
Fe+ S–>FeS
Give me some examples for the names of the compound given by the two elements that have joined.
- oxygen–>oxide
*fluorine–>fluoride
*bromine–>bromide - iodine–>iodide
- sulphur–>sulphide
What does
nickel+ sulphur+ oxygen–>
nickel sulphate.
P.S. You use the first element as the first word normally and you use the second word normally (sulphur)and if the third element is oxygen you replace the (-ur) with an (-ate).
What is the solution?
Solute+ Solvent e.g. Tea
What is the solute?
Something that is dissolved in a solvent (cocoa and sugar).
What is the solvent?
Something that a solute is dissolved in. (water, alcohol).
How can you separate a liquid and an insoluble solid?
Filter Paper.
What is an element?
An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical or physical methods.
e.g. Gold, Sodium, Copper and Oxygen.
What is a compound?
Compounds are when two or more elements are chemically combined so they can’t be easily separated.
