States of Matter Flashcards
Describe the particle arrangement of solids?
Regular arrangement. Tightly packed, hard to bend, strong
Describe the particle movement in solids?
Only vibrates in fixed positions
Forces between solids?
Strong forces of attraction between particles
Particle arrangement in liquids?
Irregular, tightly packed
Particle movement in liquids?
Particles move randomly, slip & slide. Weaker than a solid so a liquid doesn’t have its own shape and can flow
Forces between liquids?
Weak
Particle arrangement in gases?
Far apart, scattered out
Particle movement in gases?
Random and higher speeds than liquids & solids.
Forces between gas particles?
Very weak
What is sublimation?
Change of state from solid to gas without passing through the liquid phase
Name of process opposite to sublimation?
Deposition i.e gas to solid
What is condensation?
Gas to liquid
What is the difference between boiling & evaporation?
Boiling only occurs at the boiling point whereas evaporation can happen at any temperature
Formula for internal energy?
Internal energy =. kinetic energy of particles + potential energy of particles
What is internal energy?
The energy stored by the particles of a substance
