Specific Heat Capacity Flashcards
What is temperature?
Temperature is a measure of how hot something is
What is heat?
Heat is a measure of the thermal energy contained in an object
Unit of heat?
Joules
What 3 factors is the temperature rise of an object when heated dependent on?
Mass of object, amount of energy supplied to it, substance from which the object is made
Units of specific heat capacity?
J/kgC
Energy transferred formula?
Energy transferred (J) = Mass x Specific Heat Capacity x Change in temperature
What is specific heat capacity?
SHC is the energy transferred to 1kg of the substance to raise its temperature by 1 degrees celsius
Describe the relationship between specific heat capacity & temperature?
The lower the specific heat capacity, the higher the change in temperature
Explain why the filling of a Greggs pastry is always hotter than the outer pastry?
The filling is hotter because it has a lower heat capacity than the outer pastry so It is easier to transfer the energy to 1kg of the substance to raise its temperature by 1C
