States of Matter Flashcards
Changes in the States of Matter
Melting / Boiling / Evaporation / Condensing / Freezing / Sublimation / Reserve Sublimation
What are the States
Solid- A fixed shape, particles only vibrate, tightly packed
Liquid- Can move freely past each other (flow), takes the shape of the container, quite dense.
Gas- Rapid and free, expands to fill the space, particles far away from each other
Process of a Change of State
Solid - Liquid: When a solid is heated for long enough at a certain temperature it vibrates until the particles can no longer hold together
Liquid - Gas: Boiling = The heat forces the intermolecular bonds to break. this process is called vaporization
Diffusion
Diffusion is the process that allows us to smell things far away. Particles can travel many kilometres by bouncing off air particles. Spreading of particles in a gas or liquid is know as diffusion
The process is sped up in higher temperatures, particles move from where there is a high concentration to where there is a low one.
