states of matter Flashcards
in what pattern are the particles of solids packed together?
particles of solids are packed together in a regular pattern
are liquids hard to compress?
yes, because particles are close together
which two states of matter take the shape of their container?
gases and liquids
how can we change the state if of a substance?
putting in or taking out energy
if we heat a solid, what state of matter does it change to?
a liquid ( this process is melting )
why do we need energy to convert a solid to a liquid?
because energy is needed to break forces of attraction between particles in a solid
what is the relationship between the strength of the forces of attraction with the amount of energy we need to break bonds and the melting point?
the stronger the forces of attraction, the more energy we have to put into to break the forces and the higher the melting point
if we cool a liquid, what can we convert it into?
a solid ( freezing )
at what point does freezing take place?
when we cool a liquid down to it’s melting point
when a substance freezes, what happens to the forces of attraction?
the forces of attraction reform, because a solid is formed
if we heat a liquid, what happens?
if we heat a liquid, we can convert it into a gas ( boiling )
if the forces of attraction are strong, what does this mean for the boiling point?
the boiling point will be high ( because lots of energy will be needed to break the forces of attraction
if we cool a gas back down to its boiling point, what do we get?
we can convert it into a liquid ( condensing )
when a substance condenses, what happens to the forces of attraction?
the forces of attraction reform
